Formed in the late 1800s, the original Florida Chautauqua Assembly was a regional chapter of an organization that gathered performers, preachers, scientists, teachers, politicians, and everyday Joes and Janes to celebrate education. The chapter closed in the 1920s, but the beautiful Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood stuck around as a site of historical interest.

In the 1990s, DeFuniak Springs breathed life back into the Assembly, and it was reborn as the Florida Chautauqua Association.
