Dennis Hopper Rushed To ER

30 September, 2009

Dennis Hopper, famed actor and one of the stars of the new original TV series ‘Crash’ on Starz Network was rushed to a Manhattan hospital this afternoon. It’s reported that Hopper, age 73, was wearing an oxygen mask and attached to various apparatus when taken into the ER. He had been complaining of severe stomach pain when admitted.

Many of us remember the star for his countless movie roles as well as his Oscar nomination in 1969 when he co-wrote “Easy Rider.” Hopper also received an Oscar nod in '86 for his acclaimed role in the film, “Hoosiers.” Most recently he has appeared as a headliner on the Starz Network original series, “Crash.” The program, which premiered September 18, can be seen on Dish Network satellite TV.

October 1 update: while still in the hospital being treated for flu-like symptoms, it appears Dennis will be back on his feet again shortly. Good news for all us Hopper fans!

Snakes Say No To Alcohol

28 September, 2009

While viewing one of the shows on the Dish Network channel, Animal Planet, this weekend, I happened across a program I’d never seen before. Called ‘Untamed and Uncut’ it included assorted stories of unfortunate tales of animal/human mishaps.

One of the clips featured a huge Burmese python and its babysitter. While in the act of feeding a rabbit to the snake, the handler was bitten (yes, by the snake). With its long, curved teeth, the snake had a horrific grip on the lad’s hand and began coiling its way up his arm.

At the end of the program (long story short; the boy and the snake both survived) I learned that you can get a snake to release its bite by pouring an ounce or so of rubbing alcohol into its mouth. Apparently snakes will be inclined to release immediately. Not something most of us need to think about on a daily basis, but you can bet that’s some pretty darn valuable information if you ever have python teeth imbedded somewhere in your body.

There are some pretty fascinating facts to be learned by watching educational programming on so many of the informative Dish Network channels!

Jenny Slate Not Slated For Firing At SNL

28 September, 2009

There was plenty of speculation that debutant cast member Jenny Slate would be dropped from the cast roster after she dropped the F-bomb on the Saturday Night Live premiere this weekend. Turns out the SNL powers that be have decided to give her a second chance.

Slate may have gotten a little too much into character when her biker-chick skit lead to an inadvertent slip of profanity. As the show aired well after prime time, it's likely there will be no fine imposed by the FCC. Sources have also confirmed that she won’t lose her spot on the cast list at this time either. I don’t know many people who watch the show these days anyway, aside from a handful of New Yorkers and the parents of cast members, so it's very likely that the untimely use of the F-word did not offend too many viewers. Looks like SNL caught a freakin' break.

Dish TV always airs a great variety of comedy programs, especially on the premium channels like HBO.

Another Time, Another Phillips

25 September, 2009

We’ll pretend the ongoing, all too public, story of Mackenzie Phillips and her late father, John, is interesting for a few more minutes. Actually, what is interesting to me is the interview given to The Insider a short time ago by M’s younger (much younger) half-sister, Bijou.

What really caught my attention was the photo of the lovely young lady. Not only does she not look like she could be related in any way to Mackenzie, but it seems doubtful that she’s even the same species. Bijou Phillips is a strikingly beautiful girl and Mackenzie, well, Mackenzie is just not. Not to be mean, that’s simply the honest truth. You’ve seen her, right? Even as a kid back in her ‘One day at a time’ sitcom days, that girl was not a looker. One more point of interest; Bijou’s recollections of her dad are kind and warm. Sweet girl, sweet story. With Mackenzie on the other hand, we get an ugly girl and an equally ugly story. Coincidence? Probably not.
