The nation’s second largest satellite-television provider, Dish Network, has agreed to compensate CBS, the most-viewed broadcast network in the country, for broadcasting its network.
According to Dana McClintock, CBS spokesperson, the two companies reached a new carriage agreement for both CBS and Showtime. Dish Network spokesperson, Francie Bauer, has confirmed the contract, but has not commented further on the topic.
Leslie Moonves, CBS Chief Executive Officer, has requested new funding from pay-TV providers to compensate for advertiser’s decreased spending during the recession. The nation’s second largest cable provider, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon’s fiber-optic TV, FiOS have reached similar agreements with CBS during the past few weeks.
During previous months, CBS has experienced an overall decline in stock prices. On Wednesday, stock prices dropped 4.2%. Shares have fallen 36% during 2009, as of Tuesday. CBS, controlled by Sumner Redstone, will report fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday.
In 2004, when Viacom Inc. operated CBS, Dish Network removed CBS from its satellite services for two days prior to March Madness, men’s college basketball playoffs.
Providing hit shows like “The Mentalist” and “CSI: New York,” CBS is the nation’s most-watched TV network. Since the season began in September, the broadcaster is the only network to have increased its prime-time viewership. According to McClintock, CBS will negotiate retransmission contracts in markets where telephone, cable, and satellite providers utilize a signal from a CBS-owned station.
On January 6, CBS announced a 5-year carriage contract with Time Warner Cable that will compensate the network in markets in which CBS owns local stations. Among the markets are Los Angeles, New York and Dallas. Six days later, Verizon entered into a similar long-term retransmission agreement.
With Dish Network packages, you will have access to exciting CBS Network programs including “Two and a Half Men,” “CSI: Miami” and “Without a Trace.”
After reaching a 52-week low of $8.34 per share, DISH Network’s stock is now trading at nearly $14.00 per share. As the nation’s third largest pay-TV provider, DISH will employ various tactics to encourage continued success:
DISH Network’s introduction of the market’s first “SlingLoaded” DVR, the ViP 922, has created quite the buzz. With the SlingLoaded Vip 922 DVR, the nation’s third largest pay-TV provider will be able to supply subscribers with more ways to view their programming.
The SlingLoaded Vip 922 DVR utilizes placeshifting technology, allowing viewers to watch DVR programming from anywhere they want. Any device with a broadband connection, be it a laptop computer or a mobile phone, will permit subscribers to access DISH Network’s DVR programming.
The SlingLoaded Vip 922 DVR is equipped with a 1 terabyte (equal to 1,000 gigabytes) hard drive, capable of storing 1,000 hours of content. The device is highly customizable, allowing the viewer to categorize data according to date, title, length, genre or rating. RSS feeds on the home page display breaking news, weather and stock quotes.
The SlingLoaded Vip 922 DVR’s new SlingGuide allows subscribers to record and browse programs remotely from an iPhone, PC, Mac or iPod Touch. Can’t find the remote? An iPhone or iPod Touch can be used as a remote control, allowing the viewer to manage recordings without interrupting the picture on the television screen.
The SlingLoaded Vip 922 DVR will be available to subscribers in the spring of 2009, and the SlingGuide feature will be provided free to subscribers. With features and promotions like these, it’s no surprise that DISH Network’s stock is on the rise!
DISH Network Corporation, the nation’s third largest pay-TV provider, and Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable, have formed a partnership that will allow Comcast Spotlight to sell the advertising on DISH’s ten regional sports network feeds. The seven U.S. markets that will be affected include Chicago, Boston, Denver, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco and Detroit.

Keep in mind DISH Network has approximately 13.78 million subscribers that local advertisers couldn't reach before, and Spotlight has 1500 account executives and 25 years experience with these DMA advertisers. NCC, led by Greg Schaefer and Ken Little will also serve as a helpful partner in rolling out these markets. We look forward to working with DISH Network and potentially others down the road on opportunities that benefit advertisers."
