On Monday, Colorado-based Dish Network revealed various appointments, designed to improve its senior leadership team and organization.
The Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Bernie Han, has been named Chief Operating Officer. In his new position, Han will supervise Dish Network’s finance functions, information technologies, and company operations.
In addition, Executive Vice President, Tom Cullen, has taken on additional management duties. Beginning on April 27, Cullen will supervise all Dish Network marketing and sales operations, while continuing to manage the company’s programming functions. Cullen and Han will report directly to President, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Ergen.
Joining the Dish Network team as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Robert Olsen will report to Han. Olsen is the former CFO of Trane Commercial Systems, the biggest operating sector of American Standard. He previously held the position of CFO of AT&T’s Consumer Services sector, and later, AT&T’s Business Services sector. Additionally, Olsen held leadership positions in marketing, operations, finance, and planning at American Airlines. Olsen received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in chemical engineering, and a master’s degree from UCLA in business administration.

In celebration of Earth Day 2009, Dish Network announced plans to launch DISH Earth, an exclusive Dish Network channel providing dynamic live views of planet Earth 24 hours a day! Beginning this evening, April 22, Dish Network subscribers will be able to enjoy free live coverage on Ch. 212. In addition to coverage of our planet, Dish Network will include passing views of Venus and the Moon.
Mounted on Dish Network’s EchoStar 11 satellite, the DISH Earth channel will receive live feed from the globe’s first Earth-directed camera installed on a commercial communications satellite. Providing high-quality views of Earth from an estimated 22,300 miles above the planet, the DISH Earth camera delivers a captivating 30-degree by 22.4-degree image. Dish Network customers will experience the western hemisphere’s day and night cycle, seasonal changes, and weather patterns. The DISH Earth camera offers high-resolution images, approximately 20 km/pixel.
"We are pleased to be able to offer, exclusively to our customers, footage from the world's only Earth-viewing live video camera on a commercial communications satellite," stated Dave Shull, Senior Vice President of Programming at Dish Network. "What's more, from time to time, the DISH Earth camera is able to capture some unique images, including an unidentified flying object last August."
The DISH Earth camera was installed on the EchoStar 11 satellite, the network’s high-powered spacecraft launched in 2008 to provide Dish Network customers with video service. The EchoStar Spacecraft Operations Team, Ecliptic Enterprises Corporation of Pasadena, CA, and Space Systems/Loral designed the camera in conjunction with a license granted by NOAA, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In a partnership with Space Services, Inc. (SSI), Dish Network will offer subscribers photos of Earth via its Give the World program. Consumers can purchase framed photographs of planet Earth as it appears on holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays – any day of the year! Prices range from $22.95 to $99.95.
Colorado-based satellite TV provider, Dish Network, announced an agreement with BET Networks and MTV Networks. Under this contract, Dish Network will offer its subscribers high definition (HD) broadcasts of CMT, Comedy Central, BET, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, and Spike TV for no additional cost.

On April 10, Dish Network, the nation’s second-largest satellite TV provider, and the NFL Network disclosed a multi-year agreement. Under this settlement, Dish Network will continue its carriage of NFL Network in Dish Network’s Classic Silver 200 programming package. The terms of the contract were not revealed.

NFL Network airs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is the only network devoted to the National Football League, and American football. After a unanimous vote by the NFL’s 32 team owners, the channel was launched on November 4, 2003. The NFL spent $100 million to create the network.

On April 1, the nation’s leading provider of Spanish-language programming, Dish Network, revealed a multi-year contract with Univision Communications Inc. Dish Network and America’s top Spanish-language media corporation discussed the carriage of Univision’s broadcast stations. Under this agreement, the distribution of Galavision, Telefutura, and Univision network feeds will be continuously available to Dish Network subscribers.

New York-headquartered Univision serves the United States and Puerto Rico, attracting the largest Latin American audience due to its popular Spanish-language programming. Despite an overall national decline in TV viewership, Spanish-language programming is attracting more viewers than ever before. The Univision Television Network announced audience growth of 5% in March. The growth reflects adults between 18 and 49, pushing the network’s viewership to more than 2 million.
