Michael Jacksons Death and Drug Abuse

30 June, 2009

Entertainment television programs are having a field day with Hollywood’s most recent tragedy, the death of pop-icon Michael Jackson. Autopsy results have ‘leaked,’ and Jackson reportedly weighed 112 pounds at the time of death. According to E! Online, Jackson was injected with Demerol about an hour before his death. This rumor has lead to speculation that Jackson’s physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was somehow linked with the death of the ‘King of Pop.’ Edward Chernoff, Murray’s attorney, has made it clear that authorities are regarding Murray as a witness, not a suspect, to the events surrounding Jackson’s death.

Whether or not Murray aided Jackson with his drug habit, it is certain that he had a problem with substance. According to Grace Rwaramba, Jackson’s former nanny of 17 years, the pop-icon didn’t eat enough food, and often abused prescription drugs. “I had to pump his stomach many times,” she said. Rwaramba, with help from Jackson’s mother and sister, Janet, tried to stage an intervention. The attempt was futile.

Farrah Fawcett, Televisions Fallen Angel

30 June, 2009

One of “Charlie’s Angels” has fallen. Farrah Fawcett, prominent sex icon and television star in the 1970s, had died of anal cancer at 62 years of age. Fawcett was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, and she recently learned that the disease had spread to her liver. After undergoing experimental treatment in Germany, the actress who played Jill Munroe in “Charlie’s Angels” took a turn for the worst. At 9:30 a.m. this morning, Fawcett died at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Reportedly a priest visited the devout Catholic prior to her death, where she was given her last rites.

Farrah Fawcett’s acting abilities were often overshadowed by her strong sex appeal. Though, according to Time Magazine, “Charlie’s Angels” was such a popular series that nearly 60% all TV sets were tuned in during each broadcast. Fawcett has been credited for popularizing feathered locks and the ‘jiggle era’ during the 70s. She is survived by her son, Redmond, and her partner Ryan O’Neal.

Civil Unrest in Iran Dominates News Headlines in U.S.

30 June, 2009

Footage of the civil unrest following last week’s presidential elections in Iran is permeating American news television. CNN and the Fox News Channel are among the leading resources delivering up-to-the-minute coverage of the protests and violence running rampant on the streets of Tehran.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned protesters against gathering in Haft-e Tir Square today, but activists in Tehran don’t appear to be complying. Thousands of angry rioters have been confronted by the Basij militia, a voluntary pro-government force that supports Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. According to CNN, there were no reports of serious injury, although at least eight demonstrators were arrested.

News coverage from Tehran has been limited during recent events, with the Iranian government imposing strict regulations on international journalists. Protestors from within the chaos have been using social networking websites to deliver instant videos and updates. The Internet has proven to be a useful tool in keeping the rest of the world informed.

The Finale of The Real Housewives of New Jersey

30 June, 2009

The fourth installment of Bravo network’s “Housewives” fetish ended with a bang last night, with the season finale of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” The short, six-episode season concluded with a dinner-party disaster! The tension between co-stars Danielle Staub and Dina Manzo escaladed when a copy of “Cop Without a Badge” was used to break the ice. If you don’t understand the reference, this book features a mug shot of Beverly Merrill, a drugged-out exotic dancer who changed her name to Danielle. Gasp! Could this be the same Danielle? Indeed, it is the same Danielle, and she did not appreciate the release of these skeletons from her dark, dirty closet.

Hmm Danielle, if you want to keep something secret – like say, a drug-filled past life spent stripping – becoming a reality TV star is a poor choice. That’s just my logic, but what do I know?

Are you feeling a void upon the conclusion of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey?” Set your DVR to record! Tomorrow night, Bravo will air additional footage from the season finale titled “Last Supper: Second Helping.”  The Bravo network is included in many Dish Network packages.

The Season 2 Premiere of True Blood

30 June, 2009

According to Nielsen Media’s cable television ratings, the season 2 premiere of HBO’s “True Blood” attracted 3.7 million viewers on Sunday evening. This debut episode was the most-watched program on HBO since the series finale of “The Sopranos,” which aired almost exactly 2 years ago. These numbers are very impressive, considering that The New York Times named “The Sopranos” the most successful cable series in TV history.

If we take the 11 p.m. replay into account, the premiere of “True Blood” attracted a record-breaking 5.1 million viewers. What is particularly interesting about the series premiere of “True Blood” is that viewership increased by more than 100%, compared to the 2008 season finale. The Golden Globe-winning first season of the drama, created and produced by Alan Ball, won several awards and received critical acclaim. How will the second season fare? Stay tuned to HBO, and watch as vampires and humans co-exist in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana.
