Madonna's Romanian Faux Pas

28 August, 2009

In some countries, they don’t appreciate stars making political statements. Madonna learned that the hard way while performing in Bucharest, Romania.

The crowd of 60,000 went from cheering wildly to booing and jeering when Madonna made a statement against the discrimination faced by gypsies or Roma. Though the situation she spoke against is very real, Madonna is an outsider with no credibility outside of the music she sings. Apparently, making loads of money and knowing how to perform does not qualify you to make social/cultural statements in countries outside of the U.S.

Maybe we could learn something from the Romanians.

Nineteen and starting - New USC quarterback

28 August, 2009

Nineteen-year-old Matt Barkley will be the starting quarterback this season for the USC Trojans.

Me? I'd crack under the pressure alone. At nineteen, I hadn't left home, landed a real job, or climbed out of bed before noon most days that year. I was holding out for bigger things. To be fair, however, he didn't luck into it. Barkley was the top football recruit out of high school last year, and colleges everywhere were hot on his trail.

Just thinking about this kid's gusto is wearing me out. Think I'll take a nap and dream about big things. It isn't quite noon yet anyway.

Real Chance for Corn Fed?

27 August, 2009

For those VH1 fans who tuned into the Stallionaire’s season 1 reality love-quest, ‘Real Chance of Love’,  you may be wondering what happened to Real’s pretty, Midwestern pick, Corn Fed.

Despite the lovely gal’s sincere attempts to continue the long-distant relationship and rekindle their on-air spark, she has stated that, “…We even went as far as to say we were going to try and make it work. But he has not reached out to me since [the televised reunion].”

With this young lady’s vibrant warmth, VH1 might want to consider giving her a shot at her own reality show (no Stallionaires allowed). Now that Real and Chance have optimistically moved on to season 2 (note that Chance declined to select even one of the first season’s women in the show’s first-season finale), there’s no reason to deny viewers the opportunity to rally behind the engaging ex-Real girl.

Let’s go with her actual name this time though, or at least a more complimentary moniker. There’s a real chance I’d kick anyone to the curb who referred to me as ‘Corn Fed.’

Katie Reyes' Game-winning Hit

27 August, 2009

Great news! 13-year-old Katie Reyes cracked a two-RBI single Tuesday afternoon, lifting Canada to a 14-13 win over Germany in the Little League World Series.

The not-so-great news? Reyes is only the fifteenth girl to play in the LLWS since 1984. According to me this is a travesty. In my Little League days our teams were coed and super competitive. I hope the press Reyes is receiving motivates young girls everywhere to step up to the plate and take a major league swing. Oh, and not for nothing, she also snagged the game's final out at first base to ensure her immortality.

"Changed Man" May Not Change Anything

27 August, 2009

Chris Brown’s antics with his former girlfriend Rihanna have been headline news since last February. Brown was charged with beating on Rihanna when the two reportedly got into an argument. Immediately, his popularity dropped. No one wanted to be affiliated with an accused woman beater. A few days ago, a judge ordered him to stay away from Rihanna for the next 5 years. Many thought that would be the end of the Brown-Rihanna connection, but apparently even if he can’t be physically near her, Brown can still have contact with Rihanna via the internet.

Recently, Brown has released a new song over the internet called, “Changed Man.” In that song, Brown says things like, “Ima make it up to you and show the world that I’m a changed man” and “This ain’t over. . . . Baby, I’m sorry.” It doesn’t take a genius to see the message he is trying to get out to his former love.

So why has this story captured everyone’s attention? I believe it is more then just a case of juicy celebrity gossip. One major reason is that violence against women has been a topic of concern for years. The pressure has been on Rihanna not to take Brown back simply because of the example it would set for other women. So much time and money has been spent educating women to leave violent and abusive situations. If a high profile person showed that she believed her man could change, then other women might possibly justify their own situations.

This is one of the challenges of stardom. The moment you become a public figure and the attention is on you, your choices are put under the microscope. Take the feedback to the song. Some people are supportive of Brown, welcoming him back and thanking him for his apology. Others are angry about it, accusing him using this situation for his own good.

Whether the apology is sincere or not and whether or not Rihanna wants to take Brown back, is no longer the point. It’s about what their fans have to say. If Rihanna takes Brown back, she risks losing the respect and support of many of her fans. If Brown is shown to be insincere in any way, he will lose most of the remaining support that he has. No matter where their hearts are or what the best decision might be, in their lives all is decided in the court of public opinion.
