Could Al-Jazeera Be Picked Up By Dish Network?

8 August, 2011

Al-Jazeera, a Middle Eastern cable channel based in Qatar, is virtually unavailable to U.S cable subscribers. However, recently the channel has been lobbying hard to be picked up by a number of American satellite and cable providers including DISH Network, DirecTV and Comcast.

Will DISH Network pick up the cable channel or ultimately decide against it because of the controversy that often follows Al-Jazeera? Well, it could go either way because there are both pros and cons for picking up the cable channel.

Many opponents of the cable station argue that Al-Jazeera does not have a strong financial power base and there is no guarantee that the cable station can actually survive long-term economically. Opponents also argue that many Americans harbor significant stereotypes about Al-Jazeera and their programming. These stereotypes translate into a lack of demand in terms of viewers. Many cable networks worry that there will not be enough viewers to even keep the cable channel going over the long run.

However, supporters of Al-Jazeera say that the channel delivers quality news of the Middle East that is sorely lacking in the United States. Supporters argue that since the station is actually based in the Middle East, they have the resources and the knowledge to cover the region in a way that American news outlets simply cannot. They say that Al-Jazeera remains unbiased and does not promote radical ideas in any way.

So, will DISH Network look passed critics and include Al-Jazeera in their channel lineup? Or will they take those comments to heart and pass on the offer? We will have to wait and see.

Is DISH Network Attempting to Compete With Netflix?

2 August, 2011

When DISH Network purchased the bankrupt video rental chain Blockbuster back in April, many people speculated what a prominent satellite provider would possibly want with a dying DVD chain. An interview in today's L.A Times with DISH CEO Joe Clayton sheds some light on the subject.

Well, from the interview, it turns out that DISH is actually wanting to compete with Netflix. DISH acquired Blockbuster for $320 million about four months ago and has since been brainstorming ways to incorporate Blockbuster's services with their own. Joe Clayton (who recently replaced Charlie Ergen as DISH's CEO) said to the L.A Times that DISH is going to use Blockbuster's library and studio connections to offer an online video service that can rival Netflix.

Clayton said that DISH Network is hoping to expand what both DISH and Blockbuster can offer, and feels that it is about time that there is an alternative out there to Netflix. Specifically, this is what the L.A Times said about the issue:

"As for the rental chain's stores, the plan is to keep 1,500 of the 1,700 outlets open. But Clayton is not deluding himself that the traditional DVD rental market is going to make a comeback. He sees the stores as not only DVD rental and sales outlets but also as a promotional platform for Dish and the Blockbuster streaming service, as well as whatever wireless business the company pursues. He doesn't rule out selling consumer electronics at the chain either, an approach known as a store within a store that has proved successful for RadioShack Corp."

Consumers will have to wait and see what DISH does with Blockbuster's assets in the coming months and years. So far, they have been marketing Blockbuster's mail video rental service pretty heavily. They have even gone as far as offering three months of Blockbuster By Mail for free to people who sign up for DISH Network service.
