This week, reality rules all with the ramping up of an old standby, the season premiere of everyone’s favorite celebrity dance competition (make that the only celebrity dance competition) and the series premiere of the latest gimmicky reality show. Trashy TV watchers, unite! And, if you’re more of a scripted person, you’ll probably channel surf to something interesting as well.
Dancing with the Stars – Monday, ABC The battle for the Mirror Ball Trophy is back, with all of your favorite obscure celebrities, washed-up reality stars, and retired athletes on tap. This year’s roster includes the likes of Bachelor Sean Lowe – a last-minute addition – along with gymnast Aly Raisman, awkward funnyman Andy Dick, comedian D.L. Hughley, football player Jacoby Jones, and country crooner Kellie Pickler. If you’re a die-hard DWTS fan, you’ll be prepped and ready in front of the TV tonight, checking out all of the thrills, spills, and inevitable ankle twists.
Bates Motel – Monday, A&E If you’re looking for something decidedly less, well, dancey, check out the newest horror series; following in the very successful steps of American Horror Story. Bates Motel is the prequel to the movie Psycho, a new series devoted to just how Norman Bates went from typical American kid to well, psycho. Check out the all-star cast, which includes Freddy Highmore, Vera Farmiga, and W. Earl Brown. It’s a little darker fare for your Monday night viewing, but expect a dash of teenage drama, too.
Splash – Tuesday, ABC Have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch Louie Anderson belly flop into a professional swimming pool? Well, after seeing the promos for Splash ad nauseum, there’s a good chance that you’re just a little curious. Let’s be honest: this show is no DWTS and is definitely just a ratings pull, but it might be a little satisfying to check out Playboy bunny Kendra Wilkinson as she tries to make it as an Olympic diver. Even if you don’t intend to watch the entire series, set your DVR and watch the best bits on Tuesday, or you’ll risk missing out on the water cooler chat on Wednesday.
American Idol – Wednesday, FOX The addition of Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban might not have been enough to save American Idol from ratings flat line, but the contestants might be worth the watch. And, now that the final rounds have begun, it’s back to focusing more on the contestants’’ performances and less about Nicki and Mariah feuding backstage. The female contestants are excellent this year, which makes for a little more competition that usual.
Last Man Standing – Friday, ABC Calling all ‘90s teen queens! Anyone who ever tacked a poster of Jonathan Taylor Thomas securely to her teenage bedroom wall must watching Last Man Standing on Friday, as JTT Makes an uber-rare appearance back on the small screen. Playing the part of a guy who Kristin used to work with, there have been rumblings that the appearance may be a recurring one. Who cares? We’ll all just watch to see if JTT is still as poster worthy now as he was 20 years ago.
